Halley's Bible Handbook
This is going on the reference shelf! It is a bit dated, but that just means that there is even more archaeological information available now than in Dr. Halley's time.
This Handbook is designed to be read along with the Bible. The abbreviated commentary includes a brief introduction to each book of the Bible and highlights key passages.
The most important page in the book is page 814. This book is cited by Pastor Chuck Smith, of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa and it is obvious that he took page 814 to heart. A distinctive of Calvary Chapels is their acting on the advice of Dr. Henry H. Halley, as offered on page 814. (Sadly; this is a distinctive, and not a forgone conclusion common to all churches!)
Oh, page 814 expounds upon the simple suggestion that all churches have a congregational Bible reading plan and that the pastor's sermon should be from the part of the Bible that was read by the people during the prior week!
