Proverb of the Day

Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

Movie Review: Godzilla

I'm just now getting around to watching this movie (it came out in 1998). Overall its a good movie. It is relatively benign, the movie isn't overloaded with foul language or so-called "adult" situations; in fact there is no "adult" content, nudity, whatever. It might be said to be lacking for realism... but hey, this is a movie about a 40' tall lizard. There are a few plot holes, but to the good, it is basically morally positive. I liked it as a fun "mindless" movie.

A real plus for Extended StayAmerica

Breakfast!
Breakfast!

Two buttermilk pankacks (with real maple syrup), two eggs (pan-scrambled*), two bacon (not pictured**).

Yum! :-)

* Pan-scrambled is eggs that were supposed to be fried and the yoke broke.

** The bacon was too tasty to wait for the rest of the breakfast to be finished cooking and was therefore consumed before the picture!

Alive and well in Norton

It took me a while, but I finally found a valid local phone number for RoadRunner here at the Extended StayAmerica in Norton MA. There doesn't seem to be a lot to do around here, it should be easy to stay out of trouble. Looks pretty quiet for a college town.

Travel Day tomorrow

I'm traveling from Fond du Lac Wisconsin to Norton Massachusetts tomorrow. It looks like it should be a smooth flight. I expect to be in my hotel room by 2:30pm if all goes well.

Travelforcast.com seems to have useful weather tools and is well organized for my purposes. Just be sure you have a good pop-up blocker installed be for you go there.

Calvary Chapel of Oshkosh

God has blessed me by allowing me to visit with Calvary Chapel of Oshkosh earlier this evening. Pastor Bryan (who even spells his name correctly!) Semrow's inspired teaching was from 2 Kings chapter 21.

It was wonderful to spend some time studying God's Word with some fellow believers. Often we fail to value things until those things are no longer available. I must work harder to maintian fellowship while I'm traveling.

It really is a nice place...

Fond du Lac is a really nice city at the south end of Lake Winnebago. Beautiful green rolling hills in the surrounding countryside, and several nice parks in the town itself. There seems to be some activity going on in Fond du Lac or one of the neighboring towns all summer long. The natives have an accent that reminds me of the Minasotan spoken on the Prairie Home Companion radio show, which is odd, but you get used to it. :-)

It's the average temperature of 45.7 degrees Fahrenheit and the 35.8 inches (on average) of snow each year that keeps me from recommending that everyone move here.

Wisconsin, Mecca of Mexican Food?

Not. :-)

The "salsa" was very like tomato soup with onion, tomato, and selantro cubes floating in it. The entrees were okay, but had no spice (other than salt). Notice that the word pepper has not made an appearance yet... It's very reminiscent for the kind of "Mexican" restaurant we used to have in Winston-Salem, before we had any Mexicans. If you actually know how to prepare Mexican food (i.e. use pepper in your dishes), there may be a business opportunity for you here in Fond du Lac Wisconsin.

Boards are placed.

The video boards are all in place. They merely await fiber optic cable connections and signal. Probably a couple of miles of cable... The track is a little over 4 miles around. The track already has fiber in-place, but it is single-mode, and the video boards need multi-mode fiber in order to function correctly. Ah well, at least fiber is fairly easy to run.

Jo Jo's BBQ Grill... Overall a not bad.

  • The "Pulled Pork BBQ" rate an "Um" from Ron. High praise! ;-)
  • The "Our Famous Jo Jo Chicken" Sandwich was okay.

Cincinnati Airport

9-13-04 12:10 pm - There's no wireless access in Terminal A of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport.  Travel packs of Kleenex are $0.99, just as in Greensboro.  I ran out on the flight between Greensboro and Cincinnati, so I've go two packs for this (shorter) flight.

I believe that the service on Delta Connections may even be better than on the regular Delta flights.  There is no audio/video or power on the small Canada Regional Jets they operate... well, now that I think about it, the tray-table had the remains of the last flight's snack on it.  It had salt stuck to it and a dried ketchup looking substance.  At least it wasn't sticky. :-) That's the cleaning crew's failure, the lone flight attendant was professional, courteous, and able to work the small cabin quickly.  Good service.

Traveling Again

9-13-04 9:45 am -  I'm at the Greensboro airport again.  I was able to find an available power outlet, but there still is no wireless access here.

I caught cold the night before.  I had left my windows open and only had a sheet on the bed.  Two nights of restless sleep may have been a contributing factor. (Sadly I seem to sleep better in hotels than in my own bed.) I can't say that I recommend catching a cold.

Fortunately, I was able to buy some Tylenol Cold at the Kitty Hawk News store.  Surprisingly enough, it didn't cost much more than any normal drugstore.  Hopefully it will take effect before my flight at 10:35.

I can't even get a hint of a wireless network here in Concourse C of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Since I'm traveling so much, I think I'll research using a cell phone modem for access. I'm currently paying for Road Runner Access and dialing up from hotels most of the time.

Airport Delays

One can save quite a bit of money booking a flight from Greensboro, as opposed to just flying straight from Charlotte.  The trade-off being that you are dependant upon the flight actually being on time.  The plane that was to take me from Charlotte to Greensboro is delayed an hour and ten minutes.  If it wasn't for the fact that I have checked bags through to Greensboro, I'd ditch here and take a bus, train, or taxi home.  Ah, well.  Perhaps I should look at consolidating my bags so that I don't need to check bags.

Upcoming Events

X Games X is over. I worked hard during this event, averaging about 12.5 hour days. Still fun was had, and I got a chance to go back to Huntington Beach. I will have a few days off before going to Elkhart Lake Wisconsin for the Road America 500. This will be the first time I have two consecutive events, as I will fly direct from Elkhart Lake to Boston Massachusetts for the Deutsche Bank Championship. Should be interesting. :-)

20 Hour Days

The only downside to this new job is the occasional 20 hour day. Being on the other side of a 20 hour day is much better than being in one. :-)

Of course there is yet one more long day to go. Hopefully it will be less than 20 hours.

Being paid to watch the X Games is a plus. There are about 500 photos so far in the Image Station album. There are 3 seperate Yahoo! albums with all the same pictures, excluding the video.

Proverb of the Day

Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife; whoever touches her shall not be innocent. They do not despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; but if he is found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the goods of his house. Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does it destroys his own soul. He shall get a wound and dishonor; and his shame shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man; therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. He will not take any ransom; nor will he be willing if you multiply the gifts.

These things are weak, and not fit for use in a digital camera. I didn't even get 200 pictures out of them. I easily get twice as many pictures from my rechargeables. Ah well, they make excellent (though expensive) flashlight batteries, even after they no longer will operate a digital camera.

Pizza Quest

Click pic for larger image

The other guys I'm working with are staying in a different hotel. We decide to meet for supper at the California Pizza Kitchen (4) (5)...

After being given some directions of dubious merit ;-) by my co-workers, I cunningly decide to query the concierge at my hotel (1). She gives me the map, above. By her directions (red arrows) it is about a four block walk. I arrive at the location circled (2) to discover it is a rather large office building, with no shops. Believing the restaurant to be some where nearby, I wandered (blue arrows) to the Westin Bonaventure Hotel (3) where the helpful doorman gave me the directions (green arrows) to the California Pizza Kitchen (4). Whereupon I discovered that my party wasn't there. A discrete query concerning three ugly guys with southern accents produced no result other than a smile from the hostess. ;->

A quick consultation with the hostess at the California Pizza Kitchen (4) on Figueroa Street revealed that there was a California Pizza Kitchen (5) on Grand Street. I made a brief phone call to my waiting co-workers explaining that there were two CPKs in the area, and that I was at the one which was about eight blocks away from where they were sitting. They had already ordered, so I decided to eat where I was and catch up with the guys later.

As for the resturant, they had Sierra Nevada Lager on tap, it's clean and crisp, overall a very good beer. And I tried the Pear and Gorgonzola pizza. The pizza comes with something like a Caesar salad on top. It too, was excellent. The prices were in-line with less exotic pizza places back home. I recommend the CPK on Figueroa Street.

My son, if you will take my words to your heart, storing up my laws in your mind; So that your ear gives attention to wisdom, and your heart is turned to knowledge; Truly, if you are crying out for good sense, and your request is for knowledge; If you are looking for her as for silver, and searching for her as for stored-up wealth; Then the fear of the Lord will be clear to you, and knowledge of God will be yours.

Local Calls ... $1

Ever notice that the more expensive the hotel, the more expensive the "extras"?  For example, each local call cost a dollar here.  Therefore I will most likely only post at once per day (upload all posts and pictures during one call, each day).

Let me take a moment to thank God for this $1 charge.  If it were free then I'd spend all of my time here on the internet, and not take time to do other important things, like pray.

GSO-CLT-LAX Travel day

5:09 am  GSO - The US Air check-in counter was open only a few minutes late, but it went smoothly.  I got to help a few people figure out the arcane e-ticket kiosks using the knowledge I gained on my previous flight, last month.  There is a wireless network here at gate 43, but it appears to be closed to the public.  This signal is also very weak.  Note to self, research "smartsight" (the name of the wireless network).

5:20am GSO - Giving up on networking for now.  I believe that I have found the other two guys that I'm working with who are also on this flight.  The gate attendant has just arrived and boarding should begin in just a few minutes.

~8:00am CLT - Boarded an Airbus 321.  This is a pretty good sized plane with two rows of three seats.  I'm glad to have gotten a window seat as I can watch the plane being serviced at the next gate. As I have (hopefully, via my cell phone) previously posted, the Sabre computer system that operates most fight functions for both US Air and United has crashed.

~9:30am CLT - Sabre is again functioning, we should be (re-)fueling and taking off soon.  The in-flight movie is Shrek 2.  I haven't seen this yet, I'm looking forward to the movie.

10:17 CLT-LAX - We are in route, and computers are allowed to be turned back on.  I have a young high school student as a seat-mate. Pleasant conversation has helped the flight be more tolerable, despite the delay.  My Air Plane power adapter won't supply enough juice to keep my computer functioning, unfortunately.  But it will charge the batteries and I should be able to use it to extend the usable life of the batteries while on the plane..The movie is starting so I'll sign off for the moment.

11:55am CLT-LAX - Shrek 2 just finished, It is a much better film than the first Shrek.  It is definitely on my "buy" list. They offered breakfast for sale on the flight for $7,  I decided to pass.  Now showing is the "making of" feature.

12:30pm CLT-LAX -  I'm taking the opportunity to catch up on some teaching that I missed due to travel.  I have downloaded some of the old teachings by Calvary Chapel of the Triad Pastor David McGee.  This is my home church when I'm not traveling.

2:30pm LAX - Arrived intact.  Got bags from baggage claim, rented car, ate at Carl's Jr.

5:10pm LA -  Did a sight tour of the Staples Center, finally got to check in to my hotel (Millennium Biltmore Hotel).  There was a huge line waiting to check in, some sort of Self-Realization Conference with a "Yogi Somesuchorother" who, I have it on good confidence, wrote an autobiography...  Perhaps there is potential in this yogi business?  I'm entirely too "Self-Realized" for my own good. :-)
